Drug Prevention Program FAQ

How does the drug prevention program work?

The Safe and Sober drug prevention program uses a video presentation that features a story from a real Missouri family. Schools can click above and finish a small form to gain access to the presentation. The video may be shown in a classroom or a school assembly. Teachers may also conduct a discussion about the video with students afterward.

What does it cost?

NOTHING! This program is offered for free to all Missouri schools, parents and students.

When can my school use the program?

The drug prevention program is available for use at any point during the 2018-2019 school year. This program is optional, but it is highly recommended that every student at your school has the opportunity to watch the video.

The Statistics in Missouri

These numbers represent what teens across the state of Missouri experience on a daily basis. The pressure in schools across the state is growing for many students and it's important to remember why the drug problems in our communities need to be addressed.

According to the CDC YRBS in 2017, Missouri teens reported the following:

  • 19.8% of teens reported being offered, sold or given an illegal drug on school property.
  • 19.9% reported that they were currently using marijuana.
  • 1,838  reported ever using heroin.
  • 1,829  reported ever taking pain medication without a prescription or in a different way than a doctor instructed.
The CDC also reports:

  • 39% of high school students in the US report smoking marijuana at least one time.
  •  141 people in the United States die every day as a result of a drug overdose.

“I thought the video was informative and it really showed that drugs can actually affect someone that you know.” — Ian, on the 2016 drug prevention video
